NORTH LIBERTY, Ind. (July 16, 2012) - The World Karting Association Manufacturers Cup MKP Nationals ended in a high note for Checkered Motorsports. The team secured three top five finishes and 10 top ten finishes for the weekend from the sportsman to the senior rankings despite the hot weather.
J.P Southern Jr. powered his way during the MKP Nationals recording a remarkable four top ten finishes in all five classes that he entered. Southern Jr. put on a stellar drive in Cadet Sportsman 2 with a ninth place finish after qualifying 22nd. In Komet Sportsman the young pilot would come has high as the third spot, until contact forced him to settle for a ninth place finish. He would not stop there and recorded his best finish in the weekend with a sixth place spot in Yamaha Sportsman 2.
The TaG field consisted of Zack Busch , Kyle Smith, and Robert Bujdoso as they used their Mxk8’s to secure an impressive two podiums and three top ten finishes. Kyle Smith had a disappointing qualifying run in Leopard and TaG Final 1. Despite missing the qualifying setup, Smith and R. Bujdoso charged their way through the field in TaG Final 1 with both drivers weaving through a combined 13 karts. R. Bujdoso would run up to the fifth place spot until a throttle cable snapped early in the TaG Final 1 feature. Smith would settle for a eighth place finish and Busch with a DNF. In the Leopard category R. Bujdoso would finish in a strong second place finish with Smith falling for a DNF. In TaG Final 2 Zack Busch had his best qualifying run of the weekend with a 10th place starting spot. The pre-final Busch would run a solid 12th place finish while Smith showed his race craft to finish 14th after starting 20th. The 16 lap final R. Bujdoso settled in the fifth spot as Smith would be just shy from a top ten finish with a 12th place finish. Busch once again showed speed, but was unfortunate to get into an incident in the opening laps of the race.
Weston Moon had a great race during the Yamaha Supercan Lite field finishing third after qualifying fifth. Unfortunately for the Indiana native, Moon suffered a leg injury in Yamaha Supercan Heavy which hindered him to start for the main event. Moon’s replacement pilot consisted of Finnish native Matias Koykka. Koykka put on a stellar show starting from the 23rd spot to finish 12th in the MRP circuit after never touching a steering wheel since the SKUSA SuperNats XV.
Komet Piston Port Jr. Heavy Andrew Bujdoso finished a disappointing 26th after running as high as 15th place until making a driver error. Komet Piston Port Jr. Lite ended no better after getting the meatball flag for dragging the bumper.
In TaG Masters Kim Carapalletti lead the way with a 7th finish as well as a 4th. Tom Gerstner was not far behind in TaG Master Final 1 placing in the 13th spot.
