CONCORD, N.C. – The WKA Vega / TS Racing National Road Racing Series driven by Mazda returns to action this weekend, and for the first time since 2008, the series renews its campaign at the historic Summit Point Motorsports Park in the panhandle of West Virginia.
The famed Mid-Atlantic road racing facility plays host to the sixth of seven 2012 NRRS rounds. The Woodbridge Kart Club hosts the event, tagged the WKC Memorial Cup.
The Memorial Cup will take place on Summit’s popular “Main Course,” a 10-turn, 2.0-mile course that features a 2,900-foot straightaway, a variety of high- and low-speed corners a slight elevation changes, most notably the downhill turn four.
Summit Point’s Main Course once hosted WKC regional karting six times a year, with one race always the WKA national. In more recent years the Main Course has split WKC regional events with Summit’s Shenandoah Circuit, New Jersey Motorsports Park and VIRginia Int’l Raceway with each track hosting one to two events per year.
The Main Course has featured regional WKC racing every year but as noted, not a national in four years. This weekend’s event is a popular one on the 2012 schedule and should draw a strong field of enduro-style kart racers and teams from around the country.
Racing will open with another round of the Yamaha Sportsman Special Money Race, which pays $300 to the winner and invites sprint and enduro karts with Yamaha KT100, Sportsman pipe powerplants. Sponsorship of the special 30-minute race has once again been provided by “Wild” Bill Holder’s Safe Harbour Wine Storage and Jeramie Bolt’s Bolt’s Saw Service.
Best Appearing Kart Awards will be presented at Sunday morning’s drivers meeting. An award will be presented to a sprint and enduro racer.
Summit Point’s gates will open for kart teams at 6 p.m. Thursday. Friday will feature a full day of practice before some 40-plus national classes and various local-option divisions race among seven race groups Saturday and six groups on Sunday.
