National Road Racing Series Committee
Revises Rear Bumper Proposals

04.01.2008 - In December 2007, The NRRS Committee announced that it planned to propose “full width” rear bumpers in its Laydown and Sit-up Sprint classes. The new bumpers would be required by mid-2008 and would have been similar to the bumpers already required in karts running CIK style bodywork.

Since that announcement, NRRS committee members have been gathering input from the series competitors and chassis manufacturers. They also examined many of the karts present at the March 14 to 16 NRRS event at Kershaw, SC. Based on competitor feedback, the NRRS committee will recommend that implementation of the new bumper rule would be deferred to the beginning of the 2009 competition year at Daytona.

Inspection of the Sit-up Sprint classes indicated that many karts already had bumpers that meet the spirit and intent of the proposed rule. The NRRS committee is taking the current bumper designs and competitor feedback into consideration as it develops a proposal to be presented to the WKA Trustees at their April 11 meeting. Final specifications for these classes will be announced as soon as possible in order to give competitors adequate time to make any necessary change to their bumpers in time for the Daytona 2008 event.

The Laydown karts present a greater challenge due to the wide diversity of chassis styles and rear end configurations. This diversity makes it much more difficult to define a single bumper style that meets the objective of adding “full width” rear bumpers to these karts. As a result, the NRRS committee plans to continue to gather additional competitor input and to develop practical and effective ways to add wider rear bumpers to karts in these classes.
